From real life. “I love my granddaughters so much”: But I'm tired of them

I work as a dispatcher at a train station. I used to be a conductor, but eventually I got tired of traveling and settled at home.

My husband's death had a particularly big impact on this decision. During the flight, despite his young age (he was only 42), he had a heart attack. I still blame myself for not being there for him that day. From our marriage we had a beautiful son, Michał. He is a nice and sociable boy. He married his classmate, Kasia, in his third year.

Now they have two children, Maria and Natalia. I love my granddaughters, they have become my “light in the window”, thanks to whom I have learned to enjoy life again. But lately I have been rather tired of the girls than happy about their arrival.

The thing is that in the first years after the wedding, the young couple lived with me. I helped Kasia with the housework, cooked, bathed the children and prepared my son for work. To be honest, even then it was hard for me, because in addition to household chores, I also went to work. Now my daughter-in-law started working, and a few months earlier Michał, Kasia and their daughters moved to another apartment.

At first, it even seemed to me that the apartment was more spacious and fresher. The house was quiet and peaceful, and I could calmly prepare for work without worrying about someone's dinner or an unwashed floor. On weekends, I took the children to my place and everyone was happy. But now the arrival of my granddaughters has become a challenge for me.

The fact is that I work three days a week. After a 24-hour day, I naturally want to sleep. One day, as usual, I returned home at 9 a.m. At 10 a.m., my daughter-in-law and granddaughters were standing on the doorstep.

– Mom, please sit with the girls. I have to go out to do some business in the city, and they both have colds, so they can't go to kindergarten – Kasia cried. – Yes, and please feed them, I just didn't have time to make breakfast.

– Kasia, I just got back from work and I'm very tired….

– Yes, yes, I know, I'm sorry. They'll only stay with you for a few hours. But those “few hours” stretched into the evening. I fell asleep on the run, but the cursed sense of responsibility for two small children wouldn't let me close my eyes. Around six in the evening my daughter-in-law arrived and as if nothing had happened, she asked:

– Little darlings, have you had dinner? You're not hungry? I haven't cooked anything at home yet.

– Kasia, they ate and played. But what you really said was that you brought the girls for a few hours and left them all day. I need to rest after work.

– Are your beloved granddaughters work? You always said that this was your favorite way to relax – said Kasia. I had nothing to say. I thought I wouldn't die in one day. However, three days later Kasia knocked on my door again.

– Grandma Krysia, good morning!

– Good morning, Kasia!

– You must have missed Marysia and Natalka…

– You know, Kasia, I was going to sleep after my shift…

Although I resisted very much, I gave in and agreed to stay with the girls. This time, my daughter-in-law also didn't return until the evening. The whole day was like a nightmare for me, because my high blood pressure wouldn't go down, I felt unsteady, I was unsteady on my feet, but I had to endure it, because I had two little girls to look after!

When my daughter-in-law came to pick them up in the evening, she made sure without remorse that the little ones had already had dinner and took them home. The next day, while I was at the store, I met my sister-in-law, who couldn't stop praising the effects of Kasia's transformation.

As it turned out, the girl had lied to me! Instead of in the office, she spent her time in a beauty salon! I called my son, who works together with my daughter-in-law, and he confirmed that she had been taking all those days off. Next time she comes over with her granddaughters, I just won't open the door.
