From real life. “I live with my husband and his daughter from his first marriage”: She hates me and my husband doesn't want her to go back to her mother

The first day I moved into their house, I could tell something was wrong.

When I married Marek, I knew our family would never be like the fairy tales. He had a daughter from his first marriage, Zuzia, who was 13 at the time. Marek assured me that Zuzia was an open and nice girl who would definitely accept me. But reality quickly dispelled these illusions.

The first day I moved into their house, I could tell something was wrong. Zuzia didn't come to greet me or say a word during dinner. Her gaze was cold and full of hostility. When I tried to start a conversation, she would only respond with monosyllables or ignore me completely.

One evening, while Marek was at work, I heard Zuzia talking on the phone in her room.

– „I can't stand her. Why did she have to live here? This was our home, and now everything was different. Mom says that sooner or later Dad will leave her too.”

These words were like a knife in the heart. I wanted to believe that these were just difficulties related to her age and situation, but with each passing day it was getting worse.

Zuzia started making my life miserable on purpose. She didn't clean up after herself, she left dirty dishes that I would later find under the couch, and when I asked her for help, she would make snide comments at me.

– „You're not my mother, so I don't have to listen to you.”

– „You're not my mother, so I don't have to listen to you.”

– „I tried to talk to Marek about it, but he always found excuses for her.

„She's just going through a hard time. Give her time.”

But time didn't change anything. Zuzia was becoming more and more hostile. One day I found a dress that I had for our wedding scratched with lipstick. And when I asked her about it, she just shrugged.

– „Maybe it's a coincidence. I don't know what happened.”

Marek still refused any confrontation. When I suggested that Zuzia spend more time with her mother, he got angry.

– „This is her home, not a hotel. I can't give her up because you have a problem with her!”

His words hurt me more than I would like to admit. Zuzia had impunity in this house, and I felt like an intruder, someone who would never be welcome here.

The hardest moment came one evening when I heard Zuzia say to Marek:

– „If you don't throw her out, I'll go to my mom's. I've already talked to her and she'll take me in.”

Marek was torn, but I knew what that meant. Zuzia had issued an ultimatum that would remove me from their lives. I watched as Marek remained silent, not knowing what to say. His lack of reaction spoke louder than words.

Today I still live in that house, but I feel like I'm just a shadow in it. Every day I fight not to lose the last bit of my dignity. Marek and I are drifting apart, and Zuzia is taking every opportunity to show me that I will never be part of this family.

I wonder how much longer I can go on. Will my love for Marek be enough to endure this pain? Or maybe one day I will pack my bags and leave, leaving them alone with what they have created? One thing is for sure – this is not how I imagined my life with the man I love.
