From real life. “I found out my best friend had been snitching on me at work for years”

It started small.

Kasia was my closest friend. We had known each other for years, worked together in the same company, and always supported each other in difficult times. She was my confidante, the person I could tell anything to. I believed that our friendship was unbreakable, based on trust and honesty. But what I discovered destroyed everything I thought about her.

It started small. The gossip that circulated around the office began to strangely resemble my private conversations with Kasia. Once, at a meeting, my boss pointed out my mistakes that no one else knew about. I explained it to myself as a coincidence – maybe someone else noticed it, maybe I made a mistake myself. But over time I began to notice more details that made me question them.

The biggest shock came when I overheard Kasia talking to our boss. I was standing outside the conference room door, waiting for our weekly meeting, when I heard words that sounded like betrayal.

– „I really don't know if Karolina can handle this project. She's too chaotic, and she's been having personal problems lately.”

Those were my words. Words I confided in Kasia when I told her about the difficulties I had in balancing work and family life.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

I gathered my courage and began to search through our work emails. I knew it was unethical, but I had to find out the truth. Among the correspondence, I found messages that Kasia had sent to our boss. They contained details about my work, my mistakes, and even my plans for promotion. Kasia had been reporting me, questioning my competence and making herself out to be a better candidate for a higher position.

My heart sank. Everything I had told her in confidence over the years, everything I had shared with her, had become a weapon used against me. I felt anger, sadness, but most of all, betrayal.

I decided to confront her in person. We met after work at our favorite coffee shop. Kasia showed up as if nothing had happened, smiling and full of energy.

– „Karola, what's going on? You look down.”

– „We need to talk,– I said, my voice shaking. I took out the email printouts I found and put them on the table in front of her.

Her face changed in an instant. Instead of surprise, I saw something that resembled remorse – but not entirely.

– „Karola… it's not what you think.”

– „Not what I think? Kasia, for years you've been reporting me, taking advantage of my honesty to whitewash myself in front of the boss! How could you?!”

– „Karola, I… I just wanted to protect myself. I didn't want it to look like this, but you know how it is in our company. If you don't show that you're better, you'll be lost.”

– „So you decided to sacrifice me to save yourself? I thought we were friends!”

Kasia tried to explain herself, but her words rang hollow. She talked about the pressure, the difficult situation at work, the fact that she had to defend herself somehow. But I knew that wasn't an excuse. A true friend doesn’t exploit your weaknesses to whitewash themselves.

After that conversation, I cut off contact with her. I still had to put up with her at work, but our relationship was strictly professional. Eventually, her boss caught on to her manipulations, and she lost the trust of the entire team. For me, it was a lesson that not everyone who smiles and says they’re your friend is actually your friend.
