At exactly two in the afternoon, Matylda left her apartment with two suitcases.

She walked to the elevator and pressed the call button. At about the same time, Irek and Lidka entered the building. A minute later, the elevator doors opened, and Matylda entered the elevator with her suitcases and pressed the button for the first floor.
“I should have called a cab earlier,” she thought as the elevator doors closed and she stepped down, “and I should have left the apartment not now, but when the cab arrived. I didn't realize it. And now I'll have to call a cab again and wait.”

While she was riding down the elevator and thinking, Irek and his lover waited in silence for the elevator to come down, also thinking about their difficult lives. “How much longer can this go on?” – Lidka thought with irritation. After all, how long can this go on? I want to get married, but he doesn't want to divorce her. He justifies himself by saying that his wife won't let him go. I don't understand. How can you not let someone go in our times? Is he a child or what? Especially if she knows that he has another woman. Igor claims that his wife is happy with this state of affairs. But is it possible? Women have no pride, I couldn't do it. If I found out that my husband had another woman, I would pack my bags and leave that same day. I don't understand.”

“It's time to end things with Lidka,” Irek thought with longing. After all, how long can this go on? And most importantly, Lidka has no pride. Even after I told her that my wife knows everything about us and has nothing against it continuing. Another woman in Lidka's place would have left me immediately after hearing this. But this? No, and that's it. And do whatever you want. She clung to me and doesn't want to let go. Does she really think I'm going to leave my wife and marry her?”

When the elevator doors opened, Irek was stunned to see his wife with suitcases.

– You? – he said with surprise. Matylda was just as surprised as her husband.

– Me – she replied.

– What are you doing here? – Irek asked. And with suitcases?

– And what are YOU doing here? – Matylda replied question.

– For example, I was fired early from work. But what are you doing here at this hour, I don't know.

– Where am I supposed to be at this hour??

– What do you mean “where?”? You should be at work.

– I took the day off.

– Why didn't you tell me??

– I didn't want you to bother me packing.

– What packing?? Why do you have to pack?

While Matilda had previously been telling the truth, after her husband questioned her in front of strangers (she had seen a strange woman standing next to her husband) about the things she was packing and why she was packing them, Matilda became angry and decided to make a joke.

“I'm leaving you,” she said, the first thing that came to her mind at that moment. But when she said it, she was terrified. “Have you completely lost your mind? You don't realize what you're risking? You know very well that Irek doesn't understand jokes. Over the past three years, you could have remembered that your husband and jokes are incompatible. And he takes every word you say seriously. Once again, you first act and then think.”

What he heard from his wife shocked him so much that he immediately forgot that he was not alone, but with Lidka and that she was standing next to him. The elevator doors began to close, but Irek entered the elevator and pressed the button that stopped the doors. Lidka realized what was happening and stepped aside just in case.

– That's all – Matylda said with conviction – I'm leaving and that's it. I've already packed my things.

– What do you want? – she looked her husband in the eye. – You're bothering me.

She pushed her husband away and left the elevator with the suitcases. Lidka, who was standing a little to the side, watched it with interest. She immediately recognized Matylda as Irek's wife, because she had seen her in the photos on his phone. But Matylda didn't know Lidka and mistook her for a stranger.

When she got off the elevator, she immediately started calling for a taxi.

– Who are you calling? – Irek asked.

– I'm calling a taxi, can't you see? – She was about to tell her husband that she wasn't going anywhere, she was just taking her clothes to the laundry and that she was joking, but at that moment Lidka spoke up.

– So you've been lying to me all this time? – But when she said that, she immediately caught her breath and got scared.

He didn't know what to say, because only now, when Lidka spoke, did he remember her and the fact that they would spend these three hours together.

– How does she know your name? – Matylda asked, looking from her husband to Lidka and back.

– I have no idea – he replied confidently, shrugged and shook his head again. Irek's answer outraged Lidka to the core. She immediately realized that he had been lying to her all this time, and his wife had known nothing about their relationship. Strong emotions took away her ability to think clearly for a moment. She decided to reveal the whole truth.

Matylda continued her theatrics, not giving her husband's lover any satisfaction. She began to act naive and surprised and allowed Irek to make vehement denials. This enraged Lidka, who ran out of the building with threats on her lips. Irek fell to his knees before his wife and begged her to stay.

She took pity on her unfaithful husband, patted him on the head and told him to get up from his knees. She explained why she needed suitcases full of clothes and together they went to the apartment. That's how Matylda ended her husband's affair with his mistress for good.
