It all started innocently.

My parents' anniversary was supposed to be a day full of joy and memories. Forty years of marriage is a beautiful anniversary, and I, along with my siblings, carefully prepared a party at their favorite restaurant. Everything was perfect – an elegant room, delicious food, and loved ones gathered to celebrate their love. I didn't think that this day would bring a shocking truth that would change our lives forever.

It all started innocently. Toasts, memories, hearty laughter. Mom and Dad sat in the places of honor, radiating pride and happiness. At one point, Uncle Marek, Dad's best friend, spoke up. He had been with us almost forever – like a family member. We all enjoyed his jokes and kindness.

– „Forty years! It's an incredible achievement. I've always admired your love and the strength that holds you together. But there's something I've wanted to say for a long time…”

The tone of his voice changed. The laughter died down, and the entire room’s attention focused on him. Mom looked at him with strange concern, and Dad raised an eyebrow in surprise.

– „Elżbieta, I know this may not be the best time, but I can’t hide it anymore. I’ve been in love with you for years. We were close. Very close.”

The silence was deafening. I looked at Mom, who had lowered her gaze, her face pale. Dad looked as if someone had punched him in the face. My heart started pounding.

– „Marek, what are you saying?” Dad asked, his voice full of disbelief.

Uncle Marek sighed and continued.

– „It was a long time ago. Before your youngest daughter was born. Elizabeth and I had an affair. I've never had the courage to say it out loud, but I can't keep living a lie.”

I felt my legs give out from under me. Romance? My Mother? With My Father's Best Friend? This had to be some kind of nightmare. Everyone looked at Mom, expecting her to deny it, to explain it away as a joke. But she stayed silent. Her silence spoke louder than any words could have.

– „Elizabeth, is it true?” Dad asked, his voice breaking.

Mom lifted her head, tears visible in her eyes.

– „Andrzej, that was a long time ago… We were in a difficult moment. I didn't want to hurt you…”
Her words pierced my heart. The siblings also looked stunned. Dad stood up, his face expressing anger and pain.

– „You didn't mean to hurt me?! For forty years I've been living a lie! With my best friend?! How could you?!”

The guests started looking around, not knowing what to do. Uncle Marek tried to say something, but Dad shot him an angry look.

– „Get out of here! Immediately!”

Marek left the room in silence, and Mom tried to grab Dad's hand to calm him down, but he pushed her away.

– „Not now, Elizabeth. Not here.”

The party ended in a tense atmosphere. The guests left quickly, leaving us in silence. A stormy conversation took place at my parents' house. Dad demanded the truth – the whole truth. Mom admitted to the affair, but she insisted that it was a thing of the past that had no impact on their future lives. However, it was too much for Dad.

Today, my parents are separated. Dad cannot forgive, and Mom is fighting to regain his trust. For me and my siblings, this situation was a shock that changed our vision of an ideal family. The truth we discovered showed that every relationship has its secrets – and some of them can destroy everything that seemed inviolable.
