Of course it's sad when the happiest day of your life is the day of your divorce.
It's even sadder to live with someone who doesn't care much about you or your children. I got rid of the unnecessary ballast in the form of a sofa protector two weeks ago.
The reason is trivial: I'm at work, at home, picking up the kids from kindergarten, while my husband spends unforgettable moments cuddling his “friend” whom he's been cuddling for two years.
After leaving my husband, everything in my life changed for the better: I don't have to drag bags from the store every night, I don't have to cook mountains of food, I don't have to wash piles of dishes and collect socks around the apartment. And there won't be so much Jadwiga in our lives – my former mother-in-law.
She's spoiled a lot of my blood during our family life: I wasn't good enough at everything. Cooking, cleaning, raising children. Freed from the “ballast”, I was starting to live a new life, until a few weeks after the divorce.
My Sunday morning sleep was interrupted by the sound of the doorbell. Wondering who was visiting us at 9 am on my day off, I put on my dressing gown and went to the door. My ex-mother-in-law was standing in the doorway.
– You woke up? – she asked, entering the apartment.
– Thanks to your efforts – I couldn't help myself. My mother-in-law gave me her characteristic look full of contempt and disapproval.
– I understand why Marek left you. Men don't like that. – The conversation started to stress me out.
– He didn't leave, I threw him out. Otherwise he wouldn't have gotten up from the couch.
– I came to collect a debt – my mother-in-law answered shortly, taking off her jacket.
– What debt? – I was surprised. – I don't remember owing you anything.
My mother-in-law walked briskly behind me to the kitchen. I was glad that the children were with their parents at that moment. They don't like their paternal grandmother, and she's so-so towards her grandchildren. When the tea was poured and the buns I'd baked were standing nearby, my mother-in-law reached into her purse and pulled out a thick notebook.
– Here, here are all my expenses for you – I choked on my tea. After a few minutes of coughing, I was able to breathe.
– What do you mean? – I asked, surprised.
– I've spent so much money on you over the years. Time to pay it back.
Still not believing that this could be true, I opened the notebook. The lines “2 cakes”, “New Year's towel”, “broken plate”, “box of chocolates”, “earrings” flashed before my eyes. Apparently, this list consisted of my mother-in-law's random expenses mixed with the gifts she gave me. I turned to page 3. That's where the “most interesting” part began: spending on my children. “Medicines for the hospital, disposable diapers, a pacifier and cloth diapers.” In other words, these were the expenses for her grandchildren, starting with the medicines that Jadwiga brought to the hospital.
All the notes fit on 24 sheets of paper. The amount was decent. But what surprised me the most was not the number of pages, the items on the list, or the amount, but the fact that my mother-in-law had kept such notes for so many years. It turns out that for the entire six years of our marriage, she had been waiting for us to get divorced, since she had kept such meticulous notes.
She probably expected me to fly into a rage and beg her not to take money from me. I burst into laughter, which only enraged the impudent senor.
– I'm serious with you – she said and got up from the table, leaving the notebook behind her – I'll wait for the money by the end of the week. Did you hear that? – What a stupid girl you are. Let's see how you sing – Jadwiga was still threatening with something incomprehensible.
I took the notebook from the table and went to the door. My mother-in-law had just opened it to leave. I fulfilled the main wish of my morning: as soon as she was five steps from my apartment, I threw the notebook at her and said, “You are not welcome here anymore.”
I called Marek, told him everything, and told him that I would tell this story to absolutely all of his friends if he didn't stop his mother. Either his conscience got the better of him or he was really scared, but I never heard anything from Jadwiga again. But I am still shocked by this situation.
