We all sat at the table, sharing the Christmas wafer and wishing each other health, love, and prosperity.

Christmas. The house was filled with the sounds of Christmas carols, the smells of Christmas Eve dishes, and the quiet hum of conversations at the table. The Christmas tree twinkled with thousands of lights, and children ran around, laughing and playing with their new toys. Everything seemed perfect, like a Christmas commercial. But tonight, appearances would be shattered by one sentence that would change everything.

We all sat at the table, sharing the wafer and wishing each other health, love, and prosperity. My daughter, Kasia, smiled, though I could see a hint of tiredness in her eyes. My son-in-law, Tomek, was a little distant as always, but it seemed to me that it was just his way of being. We had never been close, but I trusted that he loved Kasia and cared about his family.

When the children went to play in the living room and the conversation at the table turned to lighter topics, Tomek suddenly stood up. He looked at everyone with such coldness that the conversation stopped.

– „I have to say something” – he began, his voice surprisingly confident. – „I can't go on like this. Leaving is the only way out.”

We all looked at him in stunned silence. Kasia frowned as if she didn't understand what she had just heard.

– „What do you mean?” – she asked, although her voice was laced with concern.

Tomek looked at her, then at me and the rest of the family.

– „I'm leaving. This isn't working. I can't pretend we're happy anymore. Kasia, I don't love you. I'm sorry.”

Tomek's words hung in the air like a sharp knife that cut through all the magic of the holidays. Everyone froze, not knowing what to say. Kasia stared at him as if waiting for him to say it was a joke. But he looked at her without a trace of emotion.

– “Tomek, what are you talking about? We have children. We have a home. How can you say something like that on Christmas?– her voice broke and tears welled up in her eyes.

– “That's why I have to say it now. I don't want to pretend anymore. This life isn't for me. I'm tired. I want to leave and start over.”

I was in shock. My daughter, my granddaughter, and my grandson – their family were falling apart before my eyes. I stood up, trying to diffuse the situation.

„Tomek, you can't just leave like that. This is your family. Do you really have to do this today? Can't you try to fix this?”

But he shook his head.

& „I tried, I really did. But it's pointless. I can't live a lie. Children can handle the truth better than pretending.”

Kasia burst into tears. Her world was falling apart and she didn't know how to stop it. She got up from the table, rushed to the door and ran outside. I ran after her, leaving the rest of the family in silence.

I found her in the yard, sitting on the stairs, shaking with cold and tears.

– „Mom, what am I going to do now? How am I going to cope? He's leaving us and I don't know how to live without him– she said, clinging to me like a little girl.

– „Kasia, you'll cope. You have me, you have kids. You don't need someone who doesn't want to be a part of your life– I tried to comfort her, although I myself could not understand how Tomek could be so heartless.

When we returned home, Tomek was already gathering his things. The children stood in the living room, looking at him in confusion. Kasia tried to say something, but she did not have the strength. He simply left – just like that, as if none of it mattered.

Today, as the days pass since that Christmas Eve, it is still hard for me to believe that it happened. My daughter is trying to get back on her feet, and I'm doing everything I can to help her get back on her feet. But I know one thing – Tomek will never be part of our family again. And although his departure left scars, I know Kasia will find the strength to start over. Because real family is not those who leave, but those who stay.
