From Life. “My Son Disappointed Me”: He Cheated on His Wife, and I Don't Know How to Talk to Him

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

When I found out that my son, Piotr, had cheated on his wife, I felt like the world had fallen from under me. I always thought that I had raised him to be an honest, responsible man. He was my pride – a good father, a devoted husband, a man who always seemed to have the right values. But that one phone call from his wife, Ania, changed everything.

– Mrs. Elżbieta, I don't know what to do,– she said through tears. – Piotr betrayed me. We found ourselves on the edge of the abyss.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I tried to calm Ania down, even though I felt my own anger and disappointment growing. I promised her I'd talk to Piotr, even though I didn't know what that conversation would look like. What could I say to my son, who had done something that went against everything I'd taught him?

When Piotr came over for dinner a few days later, the atmosphere was tense.

I tried to start the conversation gently, but my emotions got the better of me.

– Piotr, what have you done? – I asked, looking him straight in the eye. – How could you betray Ania?

He lowered his gaze, as if he didn't have the courage to look at me.

– Mom, I know I did something terrible – he said quietly. – But it just happened …

– It just happened? – I interrupted him, feeling the anger rising inside me. – Betrayal doesn't „just happen,”, Piotr. It's a decision, a choice you made.

Piotr looked at me with pain in his eyes.

– Mom, you don't know what my marriage has been like these past few years. We felt like strangers. I was lonely, and that woman… she simply understood me.

These words hurt me even more.

– And Ania? – I asked. – Have you thought about how she feels? How she perceives it? She was your wife, the mother of your children. Instead of talking, fixing things, you decided to betray her.

Piotr sighed heavily.

– Mom, I know I let you down. But it's not that simple.

I looked at him, trying to understand what had happened to the man I had raised.

I felt a mixture of anger, pain, and regret. I knew Piotr wasn't a monster, but his actions were unforgivable.

– Piotr, what you did is terrible,– I finally said, barely holding back the tears.

– But if you want to fix your life, you have to start with honesty. Not only with Ania, but with yourself.

I didn't know if my words reached him. Piotr left my home, and I was left alone, wondering if I could still be of support to him. Can I love and support him, knowing how much he hurt others?

That evening I called Ania. I told her that I had talked to Piotr, that I still believed they could find a solution – although I didn’t know what it would be. Ania thanked me for my support, but I could hear the deep wound in her voice.

The days passed, and I still felt the weight of this situation. I knew I couldn’t turn away from my son, but I also couldn’t ignore the pain he had inflicted on his family. I have come to understand that sometimes the biggest challenge for a parent is accepting that the child we have raised does not always make good decisions.
