From life. “During dinner I found out that my sister used the money I lent her for her child's treatment, for a vacation”

My sister, Monika, has always been someone I could rely on.

Family dinners have always been a symbol of closeness and support for me. No matter what happened, sitting at the table with my family, I felt that nothing bad could touch us. That's why I never thought that it would be during a dinner like this that I would feel the most betrayed in my entire life.

My sister, Monika, has always been someone I could rely on. That's why when she called me a few months ago in despair, saying that her son needed expensive treatment, I didn't even hesitate. I didn't have much savings, but I agreed to lend her everything I had. For me, it was a no-brainer – after all, it was about my nephew's health.

„Ania, I really don't know how to thank you– she said through tears. – „You're the best sister in the world.”

I didn't need gratitude. It was enough for me that I could help.

A few months later, during a family dinner, we were all in a good mood. The conversation revolved around everyday matters, and Monika surprisingly talked a lot about her vacation. I was surprised – after all, not long ago she said she was barely making ends meet.

“You know, Greece is beautiful– she said, gesturing enthusiastically. – “The sea, the sun, and the food… simply heaven on earth.”

Surprise turned into consternation.

– „Monika, what a vacation? I thought all the money went to Kuba's treatment.”

There was an awkward silence. Monika lowered her gaze, and a blush appeared on her face.

– „Ania… Well, things have improved a bit for me financially, so I decided that we all need a break. Kuba is feeling better, so I decided that a trip would do us good.”

I felt like someone had poured a bucket of cold water over me. Questions were popping in my head that I didn’t want to know the answers to.

„Monika, are you actually saying that you spent the money I borrowed for Kuba’s treatment on a vacation?!”

She tried to explain herself, but every word she said only made it worse.

– “Not the entire amount, Ania! Some of it went to treatment, but I thought that rest is important too…”

– “Rest?! Monika, I gave you my savings because I believed that your child's life was at stake! And you went on vacation?! How could you?!”

Everyone at the table was silent. My mother tried to smooth things over.

– „Ania, calm down. Maybe Monika had her reasons…”

But I couldn't calm down anymore. I felt betrayed and used by someone I trusted the most.

– „It's not about the money, Mom. It's about Monika lying to me. If I had known it would end like this, I would never have given it to her.”

Monika looked at me with an expression of shame and anger.

– „I don't understand why you're making such a big deal out of it. They were your savings, but it's my life and my decisions. You have no right to judge me!”

I couldn't listen to this any longer. I got up from the table and left the room, feeling tears welling up in my eyes. For the next few days, I avoided talking to Monika. Every attempt at contact from her only reminded me of how much she had let me down.

Today, our relationship is strained. She tried to apologize, but there was no real contrition in her words. I've learned that even within family, there have to be boundaries, and that trust, once broken, is very difficult to rebuild. Although I still love my sister, I know I'll never look at her the same way again. The secret she confessed at the table changed everything – and our family dinners will never be the same again.
