The decision to return to the countryside was not easy.
For years I lived in the big city, chasing a career, dreams, and a life that was supposed to be perfect. Tall office buildings, crowds on the streets, lights of never-fading neon signs – all of this was supposed to be a symbol of success, but over time it became my prison. At some point I realized that although I had achieved everything I had dreamed of, I felt an emptiness inside that nothing could fill.
The decision to return to the countryside wasn’t easy. After my grandmother’s death, the family estate had been abandoned, and any mention of it only stirred up tension within the family. But for me, this place symbolized peace, warmth, and true life. When I visited my grandmother’s house for the first time in years, I felt something inside me break. Where her laughter had once echoed, there was now silence, and the garden she had always boasted about was overgrown with weeds.
I stood on the threshold and felt that I had to change something – not only in this house, but in myself.
– „Maybe this is where I'll find what I've been missing,– I thought, looking out at the neglected porch.
The beginnings were difficult. The house needed renovation, the garden needed work, and I needed time to get used to a different pace of life. Every day I woke up early to clean, renovate, sow, and plant. The neighbors, although distant at first, began to visit me, bringing advice and small gifts.
– „Mrs. Ewa, if you need help with the fence, please let me know,– said Mr. Stanisław, my neighbor, whom I remembered from childhood.
Over time, I began to feel that I was getting into a rhythm that was natural to me, and at the same time completely new. The sun rose over the fields, and I watched the day dawn with a cup of coffee. There were no car horns, no pressure of more meetings, no crowds of people. There was only me, the earth, and time, which flowed differently.
The biggest breakthrough was the day I found my grandmother's old diary. It had been forgotten in a chest of drawers in the attic. Inside were notes from her life – described with simplicity and honesty that moved me. She wrote about everyday difficulties, her love for my grandfather, and her pride in the home they had built together.
One sentence stuck in my mind:
„Happiness is not the things we have, but the moments we share with others.”
These words became a motto for me. I started getting involved in the life of the village, helping with local events and meeting people who had lived there forever. I opened a small greenhouse where I grew vegetables and flowers, and neighbors often came over to exchange crops and chat.
One summer evening, I was sitting on the porch with my neighbors, drinking tea and laughing about old stories. I looked up at the starry sky and felt something I hadn’t felt in years – peace and joy.
I realized that the happiness I was looking for in the city was here, in this village, in the simplicity of life, in the people and in the moments I shared with them. The city taught me perseverance, but the countryside showed me how to find harmony.
Today I know that not everyone dreams of such a life, but for me, returning to my roots was salvation. I discovered that what is really important is not always where we look. Sometimes you have to go back to a place that seemed like a closed chapter to find true happiness.
