Dragon Ball DAIMA: Akira Toriyama reveals the shocking origin of the Nameks

On October 11, 2024, Toei Animation unveiled the first episode of Dragon Ball DAIMA. Akira Toriyama's latest series reveals the shocking origin of the Namek people. We tell you everything!

Dragon Ball DAIMA: we were all wrong about the Nameks!

To mark the 40th anniversary of the first publication of Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball in the pages of Weekly Shōnen Jump, Shueisha, Toei Animation and Capsule Corporation have decided to pull out all the stops throughout the year. Last March, the mangaka's fans were able to discover a serial re-cut of the film Sand Land(adapted from a one-shot by Toriyama published in 2000) as well as its sequel, The Story of the Saving Angel. On October 11, fans of the games Dragon Ball Z: Tenkaichi Budokai were able to get their hands on the fourth installment, Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero. On the same day, Toei Animation published the first episode of the animated series Dragon Ball DAIMA.

Akira Toriyama's last work before his tragic death on March 1, 2024, Dragon Ball DAIMAtakes place between the end of Dragon Ball and the beginning of Dragon Ball Super. Gomah, the new King of Demons, is worried about the arrival of the Z Warriors who defeated Boo in his world. He then decides to use the Dragon Balls to transform them into children. Superbly animated, the first episode of this new series is – like the film Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero – a real return to the roots, reconnecting with the humor of Akira Toriyama.

In addition, Dragon Ball DAIMAenriches the universe of the flagship license of the Shueisha by revealing the shocking origin of the Nameks. Until now, fans thought that these people – which include Piccolo and Dendé – were originally from the planet Namek, on which the plot of the Freezer arc takes place. However, it would seem that the Nameks are in fact originally from the world of Demons. Indeed, Gomah explains to Dendé that pointed ears are a mark of belonging to the Demon Realm. Note that a similar distinction is made in the second part of the Sand Land series, about a character who was unaware of his demonic origins.

We can therefore deduce that, for an unknown reason, several Nameks left the Demon World to go to the planet that would later bear the name of their people.
