South Korea has begun a large-scale modernization of its F-15K Slam Eagle fighters, which will last until 2037. The total cost of the project is $3.1 billion, with $696 million already allocated for the first phase. As part of the upgrade, modern AN/APG-82 radar systems and AN/ALQ-250 EPAWSS electronic warfare systems will be installed, Defense Express reports.
It is planned to modernize 59 aircraft, which will significantly improve their combat characteristics. The bulk of the work will be carried out by local companies, in particular Korea Aerospace Industries and Hanwha, which previously participated in the production of these aircraft. This approach allows you to reduce costs and increase the efficiency of the project.
The updated F-15Ks will be used to perform strategic missions, including strikes with Taurus cruise missiles. This will increase the country's defense capabilities and its ability to respond to threats.
The modernization is part of South Korea's long-term strategy to strengthen its national security. The project will contribute to maintaining high combat readiness and effectiveness of military aviation against the backdrop of growing challenges in the region.
