Czech Republic returns ambassador to Moscow after almost three-year hiatus

The Czech Republic is returning its ambassador to Moscow after almost three years. This was announced by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Former Deputy Defense Minister Daniel Koštoval will become the new Czech Ambassador to Russia.

The key countries that are strategic allies of the Czech Republic – Great Britain, France, Germany, Poland and the United States – have their ambassadors to Russia. I wish the ambassador much strength in this difficult mission, — said Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky.

Tensions in diplomatic relations between the Czech Republic and Russia have continued since 2021, when the Czech intelligence services found out that Russia was involved in the 2014 explosions at the ammunition depots in Vrbětice.

Since 1996, Daniel Koštoval held the positions of Director of the Security Policy Department, Director of the Northern and Eastern Europe Department, and Director General for Non-European Countries at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He worked at the Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic to NATO (1998-2002), at the Czech Embassy in Moscow (2003-2006), and at the Czech Embassy in Washington (2009-2011).

In 2013, he was appointed First Deputy Minister of Defense. He served as Deputy Minister of Defence for Strategy, External Relations and Planning until the end of 2018, and later for Armaments and Procurement.

The new ambassador has already received approval from the Russian Federation, known as an agrément. He is expected to take up his post in the first months of 2025.
