Cuba remains without power for the third day due to a blackout, a hurricane is moving towards the shores of the island

Cuba has been without power for the third day due to a nationwide blackout. Authorities reported that 16% of consumers have had their power restored. Meanwhile, Hurricane Oscar is heading towards the country.

CNN and Reuters write about this.

Hurricane Oscar is expected to make landfall in the coastal areas of Holguin and Guantanamo on October 20.

On the evening of the 19th, the Cuban Ministry of Energy reported that 16% of consumers had received power, with nearly 500 megawatts being generated. However, the situation is complicated by the hurricane's proximity to the east of the country. The government has ordered that tasks to protect people and material resources be accelerated, as well as informing the population.

According to CNN, people began filling WhatsApp chats with news about which areas had power. Some agreed to store medicine in the refrigerators of those who had power for a short time or had a generator.

In Havana, residents waited for hours to buy a few loaves of bread at several establishments in the capital that sell bread.

Many wondered out loud where Cuba's allies were – Venezuela, Russia and Mexico. Until now, they had been supplying the island with barrels of oil. Meanwhile, the Cuban Foreign Ministry complained about the “US blockade.”

“We appreciate the words of support and solidarity with Cuba received after the unexpected energy situation we faced yesterday. We appreciate the voices condemning the US blockade – the main cause of the restrictions and losses suffered by our people,” wrote Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla.

It should be noted that the energy crisis in Cuba is not a new problem. The island's limited infrastructure has not received the necessary maintenance for many years, and regular power outages date back to the 1990s.
