Crunchyroll: This animated film by Makoto Shinkai is available to watch or rewatch today

Fans of Japanese director Makoto Shinkai will be delighted to learn this news because the filmmaker's latest masterpiece is coming to France and streaming today on Crunchyroll.

Makoto Shinkai's filmography is very often highlighted

It was in 2016 and 2019 with his most recent films that the Japanese director was able to establish himself on the international scene. Very quickly, Makoto Shinkai became a leading animation filmmaker with Your Name and The Children of Time. This latest production allowed Japan to compete at the 2020 edition of the Academy Awards in the category of best international feature film or to appear in that of best independent animated feature film at the 47th edition of the Annie Awards.

The latest film directed by Makoto Shinkai is called Suzume. It was screened in Japanese cinemas in November 2022 and in France in April 2024 with Eurozoom. For those who haven't seen it, the production tells the story of Suzume, a 17-year-old girl who lives in the small town of Kyushu and who will meet a man who explains that he is traveling to find a door. She then decides to follow and will discover a dilapidated door in the mountains among the ruins. Suzume turns the handle and several other doors open all over Japan and release all the disasters that these passages contained. The young girl will have to embark on a journey across the archipelago with the aim of closing each of the doors.

Suzume, Makoto Shinkai's worldwide success

Upon its release, Suzume was a huge box office success both among our Japanese friends and in the rest of the world. In France, the film managed to attract 181,000 spectators to theaters for its first week of operationwhile Shinkai's two previous productions had only recorded 77,000 and 95,000 admissions. This animated feature film manages to position itself in fourth place among the most profitable Japanese animated films of all time, allowing itself the luxury of surpassing Howl's Moving Castle by Hayao Miyazaki.

During its run, Suzume will have grossed more than $300 million worldwide. Note that last year, this animated film by Makoto Shinkai stood out at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival, becoming the first nomination for a Japanese film in this competition since Spirited Away in 2002. In addition, the Rotten Tomatoes site gives Suzume a score of 96% for critics and 98% for audiences.

So if you have a Crunchyroll subscription, we advise you to watch or rewatch Suzume which has been available on the streaming platform since today at 5 p.m.. And to discover the reference to this Hayao Miyazaki classic that Shinkai slipped in, it's here.
