Create a Window Sill Flower Garden from a Single Christmas Cactus: Easy Propagation Methods

In addition to its picturesque flowering, this plant is also quite unpretentious: it does not require special conditions, and even those who are just starting their adventure with floriculture can propagate it.

With some tricks, you can quickly get healthy seedlings, and ultimately a luxurious flowering bush.

Choose the right parent shoot

Experts recommend cutting cuttings from already formed stems with several segments. It is important that the shoot is strong and does not show signs of damage or disease. Allow the cuttings to dry out.

Unlike other plants, the Christmas cactus needs time for the cut to scar slightly. Usually, a few days are enough for this. Immediate placement of freshly cut cuttings in soil or water increases the risk of them rotting.

Choose a rooting method

There are two main methods:

In water: Place the cuttings in a clear container with room temperature water, but make sure the water does not stagnate and does not reach the leaves.

In soil: Use a light substrate (sand with peat or special cactus soil). Cover the cutting lightly and keep it moderately moist. Pay attention to humidity and temperature.

The Christmas cactus does not tolerate excessive watering or a too dry climate. It thrives best in moderate temperatures (around +18…+24 °C) and regular, but not excessive, humidity.

Wait for roots to appear

The first signs of successful rooting can be observed after a few weeks, but do not rush to immediately transplant the seedling into a larger pot. Wait until the root system becomes stronger and only then transplant the plant to a permanent location.
