A senior American lawmaker confirmed that Washington supports Taiwan in the fight against Chinese “aggression.”
The statement came during the first visit of Congressional representatives to self-governing island following the inauguration of Taiwan's new president.
Sitting next to President Lai Qingde, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul said he and his colleagues “strongly support this beautiful island,” Agence France reports -Presse.
Three days after Lai Qingde's swearing-in ceremony, Chinese warships and fighter jets surrounded the island in a drill that Beijing says is a test of its ability to seize the island.
< p>McCall condemned these “terrifying military exercises,” saying they demonstrate that China “has no interest in gaining control of Taiwan through peaceful means.”
“All democracies must stand together against aggression and tyranny", – McCall said.
"Whether it is Putin in Russia, the Ayatollah in Iran or Chairman Xi next to us in China, the unholy alliance is destroying world peace."– he said to Lai Qingde.
