Colombia has been officially chosen to host COP16 on biodiversity next year, from October 21 to November 1, 2024, following Turkey's withdrawal, the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) announced on Friday. .

This COP will come almost two years after the historic agreement reached during the last negotiations in 2022 in Montreal, which promised to preserve 30% of the planet's lands and seas by 2030.

It will notably be an opportunity for signatory countries to show their commitment by presenting their national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAP).

Hosting this COP16 represents a magnificent opportunity for one of the richest countries in biodiversity in the world, underlined Susana Muhamad, Colombian Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, adding that this sends a message of x27;Latin America to the world on the importance of climate action and protecting life.

Colombia is home to a formidable biodiversity, constitutes an inspiring example of how to collaborate with indigenous peoples and local communities and is at the forefront of the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, for his part praised David Cooper, Acting Executive Secretary of the CBD.

Ximena Barrera, from WWF Colombia, during the announcement of the Colombian candidacy on December 12, highlighted Colombia's leadership in international negotiations linked to the agendas on biodiversity, climate and sustainable development – as well as his national biodiversity policy, which will be able to bring enormous authority to his presidency.

Turkey was initially expected to host this 16th edition of the Biodiversity COP but gave up this summer due to the earthquakes that hit the country.

The CBD then called on countries volunteering to organize the event – on the same dates (October 21-November 1, 2024) or on close dates – to come forward as soon as possible.

These Conferences of the Parties, better known as COPs, are devoted to biodiversity and are held every two years, unlike the COPs on climate which are annual. The last edition, which was initially scheduled to be held in China in 2020, was postponed due to COVID-19 and finally took place in December 2022 in Montreal.

Climate change threatens a growing number of species, with 25% of the world's freshwater fish species at risk of extinction, according to the latest Red List assessment #x27;International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Meanwhile, invasive plant and animal species introduced intentionally or unintentionally by the #x27;humans in new ecosystems are exacerbating the extinction crisis and causing global economic losses of hundreds of billions of dollars per year.
