Chinese developers have unveiled a laser weapon capable of destroying satellites in Earth orbit.

Chinese researchers are developing a new high-power microwave weapon (HPM) capable of generating energy equivalent to the electromagnetic pulse of a nuclear explosion. Due to its compactness and efficiency, the new weapon could be a breakthrough in the fight against drones and satellites. It is currently in the laboratory testing stage and has not yet been tested in the field, reports Interesting Engineering.

Unlike conventional HPMs with satellite antennas, the new Chinese development uses a phased array antenna, which allows for precise focus of energy, increased range and attack multiple targets simultaneously. Engineers have overcome technological difficulties, creating a stable generation of microwaves with a power of up to 1 gigawatt (GW).

A feature is a unique power distributor that generates up to 80 thousand volts per meter. This technology can emit electromagnetic pulses in Ku-band, which is used by satellites such as Starlink. Due to the use of commercial components, these satellites may be vulnerable to such weapons.

HPM is capable of effectively destroying drones and satellites in low orbit, which makes it particularly attractive for military missions. China is actively developing its own defense technologies in the context of modern conflicts, such as the Russian-Ukrainian war, and seeks to achieve strategic superiority in space.
