The boss of Pixar explains the reason for the failure of Buzz Lightyear

Indeed, in 2022, after the release of Buzz Lightyear, a spin-off of the animated film Toy Story released in 1995, Pixar had to face a huge failure at the box office. A few months after the film's release, Pixar boss Pete Docter gave an interview to The Wrap in which he gave the reason why this production had not worked. For him, it was simply because the studio had “too much to ask of the public:

When you think of Buzz, you think of Mr. Potato Head, Woody and Rex. And we proposed a science fiction film. It surprised. Even in the promotional elements. The concept was too cutting edge. Even the way the characters were drawn. It was real science fiction.

Certainly, the public had been disconcerted to say the least when they discovered the trailer.

Let's also add that the early fans of the Buzz toy had been disappointed not to find the voice of Tim Allenfor the main character, who has been dubbing him since the beginning, in all the sequels and even in the fifth opus, is in preparation.

The scene was cut, sparking anger among Pixar and Disney employees who accused the studio of not committing to defending the rights of LGBTQ+ people. The article adds that the studio's hesitation to address LGBTQ+ themes has affected the development of Inside Out 2. Several sources indicate that memos were circulated requesting that Riley appear “less gay leading to numerous changes.
