Bulgarian President refused to lead the country's delegation to the NATO summit

Bulgaria's President Rumen Radev has rejected the government's offer to lead the country's delegation to the NATO summit in Washington in July, his press service reported.

According to Radev, he was not consulted when the delegation was developing the country's official position and its commitments regarding the war in Ukraine.

This came amid a heated debate between Bulgaria's pro-Russian and pro-Western parties over whether Radev, as commander-in-chief of the armed forces, should represent the country at the NATO summit, The Associated Press reports.

Political opponents have often criticized Radev for his Kremlin-friendly stance since Russia's invasion of Ukraine and for his public statements that sending military aid to Kiev was prolonging the conflict.

He has called supporters of military aid to Ukraine “warmongers.”
