Britain and allies use AI to track Russia's shadow fleet – Business Insider

A British-led coalition of European countries has used artificial intelligence (AI) to track Russia's shadow fleet and identify potential threats to undersea cables following alleged sabotage incidents in recent months. This is reported by Business Insider with reference to information from the Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom.

It is noted that the operation of the Joint Expeditionary Force called Nordic Warden uses AI to evaluate data from several sources, including the automatic identification system, which ships use to exchange information about their location in real time.

“In the event of a potential threat, the system will monitor a suspicious vessel in real time and issue a warning that will be communicated to both NATO allies and member states,” the publication writes.

As the UK Defense Secretary John Healy said, AI will allow to control “large” maritime areas using a “relatively” small number resources:

“Nordic Warden will help protect against both deliberate acts of sabotage and cases of extreme negligence, which we have seen lead to damage to submarine cables.”

The publication adds that the new technology will operate in part of the English Channel, the North Sea, the Kattegat and the Baltic Sea. The operation was launched after reports of damage to a major submarine cable in the Baltic.
