Black Panther: the world's fastest four-legged robot created

The invention weighs 38 kg and is 0.63 meters tall.

Scientists from China's Zhejiang University recently announced that their “Black Panther” robot has reached a sustained speed of 10 meters per second, a world record for four-legged robots. It was introduced after the world's fastest humanoid robot.

According to Oddity Central, Black Panther has been under development at the Hangzhou International Science and Technology Innovation Center at Zhejiang University since 2018, but for the first six years, scientists have been trying to exceed a speed of 6 meters per second.

In early experiments, as soon as the robot exceeded this speed threshold, it suffered serious damage, such as torn “calfs”, and in some cases the entire torso collapsed. However, after numerous tests and attempts to imitate the joint and muscle structures of various animals and even humans the researchers were able to make important modifications, such as adding springs between the leg joints to soften the impact, and earlier this year, Black Panther reached a record speed of 10 m/s.

The researchers explained that they were able to achieve this important milestone by implementing innovative control algorithms and experimenting with different materials and structures.

Black Panther's record speed – 10 m/s – approaching the top speed of a human running, which can only be achieved by elite sprinters in the 100-meter distance. Now Chinese researchers are aiming for a different speed – 15 m/s.

Machines like the Black Panther can only reach record speeds in a controlled environment. The Chinese researchers explained that maintaining a speed of 10 m/s requires a huge amount of energy and is a difficult test for the body when running on a hard surface, so for now it can only be done on a treadmill.

The four-legged Black Panther robot weighs 38 kg and is 0.63 meters tall. Meanwhile, the world's fastest humanoid robot is 170 cm tall, weighs about 65 kilograms and can run at a speed of 3.6 meters per second.
