Days before Hezbollah leader Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli strike, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called on him to leave Lebanon, Reuters reported, citing three Iranian sources.

After the attack on Hezbollah, On September 17, Khamenei sent an envoy using pagers laced with explosives to persuade Nasrallah to leave for Iran. The supreme leader cited intelligence that Israel had agents in Hezbollah and was planning to kill him, a senior Iranian official told Reuters.

The envoy was Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Brigadier General Abbas Nilforoushan, who was with Nasrallah in his bunker and was killed along with him in the Israeli strike.

Khamenei, who is at a secret location in Iran, ordered the firing of about 200 rockets at Israel on Tuesday, October 1, a senior Iranian official said. The IRGC said the strikes were in retaliation for the deaths of Nasrallah and Nilforoushan; The statement also mentioned the July assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, for which Israel has not claimed responsibility.
