Free press organization «Reporters Without Borders» (RSF) has called on Apple to get rid of an AI system that mistakenly reported the death of the assassin of the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, who was shot at point-blank range.
The AI error, which generated a false summary based on a BBC headline that did not actually exist (Apple's AI misinterpreted the headline of one of the news stories on the subject), «underlines the inability of such systems to provide reliable information», the reporters said. RSF believes that «the probabilistic approach to the operation of AI systems makes them unreliable for news media and should not be used for such purposes».
The organization has asked Apple to remove this feature from its operating systems.
«The automatic creation of false information attributed to the media threatens the public's right to reliable information», — The Register reported, citing RSF.
«Facts cannot be decided by the roll of the dice. RSF calls on Apple to act responsibly and remove this feature,” said Vincent Berthier, head of RSF’s technology and journalism department.
