Apple postpones the creation of a “smart” ring

Despite many years of rumors and a large package of patents related to "smart" ring by Apple, a new report claims that the company has no plans to release it. According to Bloomberg, Apple decided not to promote the development of “smart” ring, so as not to create competition with its own smart watches.

What else is known

“Apple is not actively developing a ring and does not plan to his release”, – wrote Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. "[Because it] would distract attention from the Apple Watch".

He continued: "[So Apple" it doesn't make sense to cannibalize a product that still has growth potential and is the envy of the fitness tracker industry».
Apple is known for its willingness to create products that can replace existing ones, even its own. The most famous example – as the company completely replaced its iPod with the introduction of the iPhone. However, in this case, the company probably prefers to keep the focus on the Apple Watch.

Among the many rumors about the Apple Ring, there were also those where the device could work in tandem with the Apple Watch. For example, wearing the Apple Ring and Apple Watch together could improve the accuracy of heart rate measurements.

Also, according to several patents in recent years, Apple has been exploring gesture control technologies, possibly related to the use of Apple Vision. Pro. Many expected the Apple Ring to be an additional accessory that fits into Apple's existing ecosystem rather than a replacement for other devices.

However, if the information is correct, this marks the second cancellation of the high-profile device in 2024, which Apple has not officially announced. In February 2024, it was revealed that the ten-year-old Apple Car project had been completely cancelled.

In the case of the Apple Car, there was no competing device from the company itself that could be affected by its release. But otherwise, there are striking similarities: Apple's automotive research efforts continue to be documented in recently awarded patents.
