Android 15 operating system update released, protects against phone hacking threats

The new year started with an important warning for Pixel smartphone owners running Android 15. Google has released an update that fixes critical bugs in the system. These vulnerabilities allowed attackers to crack the code remotely without additional permissions. Forbes writes.

What happened

Google has confirmed that it has started January software update for all Pixel smartphones running Android 15 to prevent a potential hack. The update began rolling out on January 9, 2025, and will take about a week to roll out. The exact date varies by carrier and device model.

Pixel users will receive a notification when the update is available. The company advises: «Check which version of Android you are using and update to install the latest software».

While there have been no active attacks reported yet, Google is urging Pixel owners to update their devices as soon as possible to avoid potential issues.

What else is new for Android 15

In addition to bug fixes, a new beta version of the platform update, Quarterly Platform Release (QPR) 2, is available for those already using Android 15. This update is part of the preparation for the first major Pixel Drop of 2025, which is scheduled to be released in March. Anyone interested can participate in testing this update by registering for the beta testing program.

The January security update is also available for Samsung S24, but these smartphones are still running Android 14. Samsung owners receive the update more slowly due to the complex process of adapting the software for different devices. At the same time, Google can send updates to Pixel owners faster because it creates both the hardware and the operating system itself.
