And again Gatling: Polish gunsmiths have created a system to combat drones based on a 12.7-mm machine gun

Polish company Zakłady Mechaniczne «Tarn&oacute ;w» together with the Warsaw Military University of Technology (WAT) offers the defense market a modern anti-UAV system called System Zwalczania Dronów.

According to the information message posted on the official portal of the Polish Army, this system was developed to combat low-class drones. nano and micro, and also other small flying objects’, ArmyInform informs.

This type of defense solutions is a weapon for combating short-range drones, which is also called a "weapon of the last chance" , and it is used when the drone is relatively close to the object. The system is ideal for protecting critical infrastructure.

The basis of this system's armament is the WLKM 12.7 mm multi-barreled machine gun, designed according to the Gatling scheme, which effectively hits targets at a distance of up to 2,000 km. meters.

It is worth reminding that Gatling machine gun — one of the most famous first rapid-fire weapon systems, the forerunner of the modern machine gun. Invented by Richard Gatling, the system became famous for its use by the Northern States Army during the American Civil War in the 1860s, when it was first used in combat.

The combat system System Zwalczania Dronów was the result of cooperation between Zakłady Mechaniczne Tarnów and WAT. The main goal of development — to provide an effective anti-UAV solution while maintaining a balance between cost and functionality. The system uses available munitions, the latest target detection and tracking technologies, which makes it a reliable tool on the battlefield.

The system is equipped with remote control and can work both in manual and automatic modes. The flexibility of the design allows you to install it on different platforms — from stationary objects to mobile vehicles and sea vessels.

The key component is the WLKM 12.7mm Gatling machine gun developed by Zakłady Mechaniczne Tarnów. The weapon uses 12.7 mm x 99 NATO (.50 BMG) ammunition and has an adjustable rate of fire from 250 to 3600 rounds per minute. The maximum firing range reaches 2,000 km. meters Queues can consist of 50–200 shots, which gives flexibility when firing at different types of targets.

The machine gun is equipped with four rotating barrels, they are activated by an electric motor with a voltage of 27 V. Also, the system is integrated with an optoelectronic head, which includes daytime and thermal imaging cameras, as well as a laser rangefinder. The radar system allows you to detect UAVs, including small drones, at a distance of up to 15 kilometers. System Zwalczania Dronw supports three operating modes: manual mode. — the operator fully controls the system and independently points the machine gun at the target;

— semi-automatic mode — the system helps in tracking the target on the basis of video analysis, which reduces the burden on the operator;

— automatic mode — the system autonomously detects, identifies and accompanies targets, but the final decision to open fire remains with the operator.

Remote control allows the operator to be at a safe distance from the combat zone. Control is carried out through a panel with a large screen on which information from cameras is displayed, which allows the operator to assess the situation more accurately and increases his safety. System Zwalczania Dronw is a modern and multifunctional solution. to combat unmanned aerial vehicles. Powerful WLKM 12.7mm machine gun, integrated surveillance and automatic support systems make this weapon an effective tool for modern military operations, ensuring safety and flexibility in operation.
