In Kyiv, customs officials discovered a mammoth tooth in a parcel that is over 13,000 years old. A resident of Prykarpattia sent cultural value of the Late Pleistocene to Qatar.
A resident of Prykarpattia sent it to Qatar and declared it as a “metal product worth $50”. This is stated on the website of the capital customs.
However, instead of a metal object, during the customs control of an international parcel, customs officers found a large block of an irregular shape.
Experts of the National Science and Nature Museum of Ukraine helped the customs officers to identify the find. Scientists have established that the discovered block is a tooth of the lower jaw of a mammoth with preserved roots.
These specimens are rare and have important scientific significance. The dark color of the tooth indicates its presence in a moist soil environment. The findings of such teeth are valuable for the study of the species diversity of mammoths in the Pleistocene of Ukraine, because mammoths are typical animals of the late Pleistocene of Ukraine (130-13 thousand years ago), the message says.
According to the discovered fact regarding the resident of Ivano-Frankivsk region, the Kyiv customs office drew up a report on violation of customs rules under Article 473 of the Customs Code of Ukraine. Paleontological specimens have been removed.
