An extremely rare and expensive prototype of an Apple computer was put up for auction

A prototype of the first Macintosh will be auctioned later this month. Here are a few facts that make it truly special.

What is known about this 1983 Macintosh

Prototype #M0001 features Apple's own “Twiggy” drive. Apple quickly abandoned the “Twiggy” design due to performance issues, and instead adopted drives from Sony. So there are not just very few such computers in the world – there are only two of them, which makes the lot very valuable for collectors, according to the Bonhams website.

What can be the price? The starting price is listed on the website as “$80,000 – $120,000”. However, it will eventually increase during trading. The computer is expected to break the record of another such model, which sold for $150,075 in 2019.

  • The Macintosh computer is said to have a disk drive with a matching slot on the front panel, as well as mouse and keyboard prototypes included.
  • Inside – logic board 820-0086-00, patented in 1983. It bears the image of Jean-Michel Folon, known as “Mac Man” (Mr. Mackintosh).
  • The body is plastic. , 330x245x250 millimeters, with a smooth plastic front panel and a textured plastic body with the Macintosh team's signature embossed on the inside.
  • Unfortunately, the computer is missing one of its rubber feet.

The new Macintosh was first introduced during Super Bowl XVIII. The company showed an advertisement that presented both the computer and the company itself to viewers – cool, rebellious and heroic, which was going to change the world forever. Although sales were sluggish at first, the all-in-one design eventually took off.
