The American defense technology company General Dynamics Mission Systems (GDMS) has received a contract from the US Navy to produce sets of modernized MK 54 Mod 1 lightweight torpedoes. The contract, worth up to $ 808.6 million, includes the supply of test equipment, spare parts, engineering support and other related services. The work will be carried out in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, and should be completed by December 2032, Naval News writes.
The MK 54 lightweight torpedoes are the main anti-submarine weapon in the United States. They are used on ships, aircraft and helicopters. The system is designed to operate in shallow water and under countermeasure conditions, allowing it to effectively track, classify and destroy underwater targets.
The MK 54 torpedo combines the modern sonar transducer from the MK 50 with the warhead and engine system from the older MK 46. The Mod 1 modification includes an upgrade to the sonar array hardware and associated electronic components. Since their introduction into service in 2004, the torpedoes have undergone several upgrades, ensuring high efficiency and reduced costs throughout their life cycle.
