Alien Romulus: Discover The Offspring's Alternative Concept Art

Released on August 14, Alien: Romulus has generally convinced fans. Directed by Fede Alvarez, the feature film fits perfectly into the identity of the license created by Ridley Scott in 1979. Recently, artist Dane Hallett unveiled an alternative concept art to the hybrid creature from the end of the film: The Offspring.

Alien: Romulus – a convincing new installment

Seven years after the release of Alien: Covenant, the license is once again reborn from its ashes with a ninth opus (if we count the two Alien vs Predator). Realized by Fede Alvarez, the smart guy behind the remake of Evil Dead (2013) and behind Don&rsquo ;t Breathe (2016), this new episode has generally convinced fans and professional critics. Fede Alvarez has done his homework well and has produced a polished, well-paced, aesthetically pleasing film that fits perfectly into the creative identity of the license. On the box office side, Alien: Romulus has already grossed more than $330 million worldwide.

At the end of the story, Fede Alvarez pays tribute to Alien, The Resurrection (1997). Indeed, like Jean-Pierre Jeunet before him, the Uruguayan filmmaker features a hybrid creature, half-man, half-xenomorph, nicknamed The Offspring. A terrifying creature, which comes out of the belly of Kay (Isabela Merced), after the latter injects herself with an unknown product.

A very different design

Nicknamed The Offspring in the credits of Alien: Romulus, this terrifying creature is a worthy heir to the albino humanoid monster at the end of Alien: Resurrection. Recently, artist Dane Hallett revealed several alternative designs for The Offspring. He even imagined a version with wings. He shared the different concepts of the creature directly on his Instagram account:

Alien: Romulus… The offspring adult.

At one point, the product that Kay uses on herself has such a dramatic genetic effect on her unborn child that it becomes this monstrosity. It makes it all the way to the light and eventually turns into something else. But we just go back to the offspring that you saw in the final cut.

It was nerve-wracking… Was I going to be responsible for an unloved mutation in the Alien universe? I tried desperately to give this thing a purpose, a presence, and make it an ode to everything that had come before…

Ultimately, I'm grateful for what we got in the final cut, but here's what it could have looked like.

The first few images are of the final version that was made available, while the last few are my rough cuts where it was meant to be fixed to the hull of the Corbelan.

Drink acid blood.

Cheers!

It should be noted that The Offspring's design with wings is particularly intriguing. It's a shame that Fede Alvarez didn't keep this idea, which is truly new in the landscape of the saga. Alien: Romulus could have presented the very first Xenomorph with wings… And you, what is your favorite Offspring?
