US President's National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan called artificial intelligence the greatest threat to US national security. He said this during his final briefing at the White House on January 13, answering questions from reporters.
“One way to answer that question is to talk about the potential for Chinese aggression in the coming years, and the ongoing challenges from Russia. But I'll answer it a little differently. I sincerely believe that the most important thing that's happening in the world right now is the scale, the pace and the amazing speed with which artificial intelligence is changing the global landscape,” Sullivan replied.
According to a senior White House official, a decisive technological race is underway for the latest technologies.
“It will either work for us or against us. For it to work for us, we have to be ahead of the curve and shape the rules. The Biden administration has put forward the first international set of standards for artificial intelligence, codified by the UN General Assembly. There is still work to be done on that front,” the US national security adviser explains.
Sullivan noted that the Biden administration has invested in ensuring leadership in the field of artificial intelligence.
“If China, not the United States, determines the future of artificial intelligence on the planet, then the stakes are extremely high,” he adds he.
Sullivan stressed that this issue should not be one that divides political parties. He expressed hope that the incoming administration of Donald Trump will continue to work in this direction.
“So I hope that the new administration, since this should not be a controversial issue, also sees this challenge and this opportunity. And can seize the initiative so that this technology works for America, and not for enemies who will use it against us,” the official concluded.
Commenting on the results of Joe Biden's foreign policy, Sullivan said that during his term, the United States “has strengthened alliances and weakened enemies without drawing America into war.”
