After announcing an adaptation of Christopher Pike's novel The Midnight Cub into a horror series for Netflix under the direction of Mike Flanagan, the show has finally been cancelled in 2022. Today, it's the turn of another horror series to bow out after broadcasting three seasons.
To everyone's surprise, while its creator had declared in an interview that he had ideas for developing a fourth season, The network that offered this horror series announced that it would be canceled after three seasons, despite many unanswered questions. Even though the show's cast had shown their desire to film more seasons and fans campaigned to save the series, no, SYFY and USA Network will not produce an additional season of Don Mancini's Chucky series.
Indeed, shortly after the end of season 3, the fans, cast and crew behind the series Chucky mobilized in an online campaign #RenewChucky to keep the hope of having the right to another season.
In this series, which follows the films in the Chucky franchise, the plot takes place four years after the events of the opus The Return of Chucky released in 2017. In a peaceful American suburb, a 14-year-old teenager, Jake Wheeler, discovers a Chucky doll at a garage sale. Very soon after the purchase, several murders occur in the city. The doll is actually possessed by the spirit of serial killer Charles Lee Ray.
Last May, in an interview with SYFY, Don Mancini explained that he had several ideas in mind if a fourth season of Chucky was decided:
You know, that's one of the perks of working on a franchise for almost 40 years. I spend a lot of time thinking about it. I have a lot of ideas… new characters and new relationships. I don't want to give too much away… I have an idea for Season 4 if we do it – fingers crossed – and I'm really excited about it.
Despite everything, SYFY and USA Network have decided that the Chucky series will not return for a fourth season. Don Mancini responded to this decision by declaring “to be heartbroken by the news that Chucky will not be returning“. He wanted to thank the network, the cast, the crew and the fans who mobilized. And above all, he reassured the disappointed public by posting a message of hope on his X account: Chucky will be back.
