After Google, Apple identifies the “Gulf of America” in its plans

After Google, the digital giant Apple has renamed the Gulf of Mexico to refer to the Gulf of America on its online mapping application Apple Plans, at least for its American users, using the name now wanted by Donald Trump.

The application does indeed speak of the “Gulf of America” on a device connected to the internet from the United States. On the other hand, connected outside the United States, it is still called “Gulf of Mexico”, according to its name used elsewhere in the world.

Contacted by AFP in Paris, Apple was not immediately available to comment on this situation.

Donald Trump signed a decree at the end of January ordering the change of name of this sea in the south-east of the United States, on the sea bordered by Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Mexico and Cuba.

He welcomed on Monday that Google Maps, the ultra-dominant mapping service in the United States, had changed the name of the gulf, again for its American customers, maintaining the name Gulf of Mexico for its Mexican customers.

Unlike Apple, which leaves “Gulf of Mexico” elsewhere in the world, Google uses both names “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)”, as is the case for disputed places, for countries third parties.
