A complete power outage occurred in Cuba on October 18, the Diario de Cuba newspaper reports.

The Antonio Guiteras power station in Matanzas, which is considered one of the main elements of Cuba's power supply system, went out of order. The station went out at about 11:00 local time (18:00 Kyiv time), the Ministry of Energy and Mining reported. Power engineers are working to restore power supply.

Almost 10 million people were without electricity, Reuters writes. In Cuba, all educational institutions were closed by October 20. The authorities also banned entertainment and cultural events, including closing nightclubs. On October 18, only employees of state-owned food and health care enterprises are to return to work.

The power outage, as Diario de Cuba notes, has escalated the energy crisis on the “Island of Freedom”. Over the past two weeks, Cuba has been experiencing constant power outages for several hours a day. On October 11, the power supply was stopped for 24 hours.

The infrastructure at local power plants is long outdated, and 40% of the country's fuel tanks were destroyed in 2022 after a fire at an oil depot in Matanzas.

Earlier, BAGNET reported that Cuba would receive electricity from floating power plants.
