The Pentagon said Thursday, Oct. 17, that the U.S. military was not involved in the Israeli operation that killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, although U.S. intelligence contributed to informing Israel about the location of Hamas leaders, a militant group designated by the United States as a terrorist organization.

"It was an Israeli operation. The U.S. military was not directly involved," — “The United States has been instrumental in providing information and intelligence related to the release of the hostages and tracking the Hamas leaders who are responsible for holding the hostages. And of course, that generally contributes to our understanding of the situation,” Ryder said.

“But again, this was an Israeli operation. I would encourage you to reach out to them for more details on how that operation went,” the Pentagon spokesman added.

His comments followed US President Joe Biden's announcement of Sinwar's death. The president said that after the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, he ordered US special response forces and intelligence services to help Israel find Sinwar and other militant leaders.
