The basis of the Challenger 3 modification — integration of a new turret with a 120mm L55A1 smoothbore gun replacing the previous L30A1 rifled gun. Although it will be necessary to develop a new projectile with kinetic energy.

The British Ministry of Defense took into account issues related to the future Challenger 3 program. By 2027, the new tank will be operationally ready, and by 2030 — ready for combat operations. This was reported by the UK Defense Journal portal. “Challenger 3 is an important program that is on schedule to achieve initial operational readiness in 2027 and full operational readiness in 2030.” — said Luke Pollard, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of Defence.

Pollard added that the current strategic defense review aims to align future technological development with the UK's security needs. The ministry will report regularly to representatives of the parliament, with a full report expected by mid-2025. The current review is designed to ensure that the UK's defense infrastructure meets current and future requirements.

The Challenger tank series has a long history. The first Challenger appeared during World War II, then Challenger 1, released in the 1980s, followed — Challenger 2, which participated in the 2003 Iraq War.

The Challenger 3, developed by Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land, is an upgrade of the existing Challenger 2 tanks, rather than a completely new vehicle. At the heart of the new Challenger 3 program — a former project that was aimed at extending the service life of Challenger 2, improving mobility and survivability.

The basis of the Challenger 3 modification — integration of a new turret with a 120 mm L55A1 smoothbore cannon, replacing the previous L30A1 rifle. This meets NATO standards and improves interoperability. Although this will still require the development of a new projectile with kinetic energy in cooperation with Germany, because the smoothbore system is not compatible with the current Challenger 2 ammunition.

The new Challenger 3 will have a digital electronic architecture, an improved third-generation hydrogas suspension , mobility will increase and the fire control system will be improved. The tank is also equipped with modernized guidance systems for the commander and gunner, in particular, an improved thermal imaging system.

The first deliveries of pre-series Challenger 3 tanks began in early 2024, and combat firing — in Germany in April. The British Army is to receive a total of 148 tanks, the first of which will enter service in 2025. The estimated cost of the project is about 1.17 billion dollars. At the same time, around 300 jobs are expected to be created at RBSL's Telford (Shropshire) facility. A further 450 additional roles will be available across the UK supply chain.
