The latest evaluations from DxOMark showed unexpected results of iPhone 16 Pro Max, compared to its Chinese competitors.
< p>iPhone 16 Pro Max was compared with Vivo X100 Pro, Xiaomi 14 Ultra and Huawei Pura 70 Ultra. Tests have shown that Chinese smartphone manufacturers have made significant progress, especially in areas such as telephoto and ultra-wide-angle photography.
When comparing telephoto capabilities, DxOMark noted that Chinese smartphones capture more detail, especially at long distances. Xiaomi 14 Ultra and Vivo X100 Pro stood out with accurate skin tone rendering and noise reduction. While the images from the iPhone 16 Pro Max showed more noise and less sharp details.
For example, in the photo of the city panorama taken by the main camera, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra provided the clearest and most detailed image. The Vivo X100 Pro performed slightly worse, but still outperformed the iPhone 16 Pro Max in detail preservation.

DxOMark also presented a graph showing detail retention with telephoto lenses. The Huawei Pura 70 Ultra led at lower zoom levels, while models from Vivo and Xiaomi beat the iPhone 16 Pro Max at higher zooms. This is due to the low resolution (12MP) of the 5x periscope telephoto on the iPhone. At a magnification of more than 5 times, the device begins to use a crop from the sensor, which leads to a rapid loss of details. On the other hand, the 50MP telephoto sensors of Vivo and Xiaomi maintained sharpness and clarity even at significant zoom levels.
As for ultra-wide-angle shots, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is lagging behind again. Its images turned out to be less detailed and with a lot of noise, especially compared to the sharper results of devices from Huawei and Vivo. While the Xiaomi 14 Ultra's ultra-wide shots were slightly oversaturated, they still retained more detail than the iPhone's.
