SpaceX will speed up Starlink ten times

SpaceX will speed up Starlink ten times

The SpaceX company has submitted a request to the FCC (Federal Communications Commission of the United States) to make a number of changes to the Starlink satellite communication network. The changes will be part of SpaceX's Gen2 NGSO satellite network, which SpaceX says will bring several important improvements. Namely, it will allow SpaceX to provide gigabit services to Starlink customers, increasing the speed tenfold from 100 Mbps. Other improvements include lower latency, ubiquitous mobile connectivity, and more.

To do this, SpaceX is asking for permission to lower three groups of its satellites to about 8.5% of their current altitude — from 525 km, 530 km and 535 km to an altitude of 480 km, 485 km and 475 km, respectively. SpaceX says the move will also reduce the chance of collisions with other satellites when the Starlink spacecraft reach the end of their life, and allow their remains to burn up more quickly in Earth's atmosphere.

The lower orbit will also make it easier for SpaceX to deploy more satellites. in the future as demand from potential customers grows, especially in rural areas.

In addition to the lower orbit, SpaceX is calling for a change in the minimum elevation angle of five degrees from 25 to 20°. This change will increase the amount of time the satellite can maintain contact with ground stations despite being closer to the horizon. However, there are fears that this will cause interference with other satellite systems, although SpaceX has included evidence to the contrary.
