The European Union condemns any attacks on UN missions, said European Union Foreign Minister Josep Borrell in response to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) actions against the UN peacekeeping mission (UNIFIL) in Lebanon.
“Such attacks on UN peacekeepers are a flagrant violation of international law and are completely unacceptable. These attacks must stop immediately,” – Borrell said in a statement, Reuters reports.
“The EU condemns any attacks on UN missions,” Borrell said.
The European Union's top diplomat expressed “particular concern over the attacks by the Israeli Defense Forces on UNIFIL, which left several peacekeepers injured.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the peacekeepers had served as “human shields” for Hezbollah militants during the intensification of fighting. In his statement, Borrell stressed that “all participants” conflict are obliged to ensure the safety of UN personnel and property.
“We expect urgent explanations and a thorough investigation from the Israeli authorities into the attacks on UNIFIL, which plays a fundamental role in the stability of southern Lebanon,” he said.
Earlier, the United States called on Israel not to endanger UN peacekeepers in Lebanon.
