Using ChatGPT may become more expensive in the coming years. Moreover, the price of a monthly subscription may increase more than twice.

New York Times, citing internal OpenAI documents, reports that OpenAI plans to raise the price of an individual subscription to ChatGPT from $20 per month to $22 per month by the end of the year. But that's not all.

Over the next five years there will be an even sharper increase; by 2029, OpenAI expects to charge $44 per month for a ChatGPT Plus subscription.

The aggressive moves reflect pressure on OpenAI from investors to cut losses. Although the company's monthly revenue reached $300 million in August, OpenAI expects to lose about $5 billion this year, according to the New York Times. This is due to costs such as staffing, office rent, and infrastructure for AI training. ChatGPT alone has reportedly cost OpenAI $700,000 per day.

OpenAI may face negative consequences if it raises prices too quickly. Although ChatGPT has about 10 million paid users today, surveys show that many consider the current price of $20 per month too high.

Recall that, according to the Pew Research Center, about a quarter of Americans have used ChatGPT since its launch chatbot in 2022. And each request requires certain costs. Research shows that one 100-word e-mail requires the use of a 0.5-liter bottle of water.
