In the American state of Alabama, a man convicted of killing three people was executed using nitrogen. This is the second execution in the world using gas.

The death of 59-year-old Alan Eugene Miller occurred on September 26 at 18:38 local time (September 27 at 2:38 Kyiv time), the Associated Press reports.

The agency writes that when the gas was applied, the convict began to convulse, which lasted almost two minutes.

Alan Eugene Miller was found guilty of murdering three people in 1999. In 2022, an attempt was made to carry out the death sentence using an injection, but the executioner could not find a vein to inject the drug.

The first execution using nitrogen was carried out in January in the same state of Alabama. Kenneth Eugene Smith was sentenced to death for a contract killing in 1988.

The UN and the EU have criticized the use of the new method of capital punishment and have also spoken out against the imposition of such sentences. The death penalty using nitrogen is permitted in three US states – Alabama, Oklahoma and Mississippi.

The agency recalls that in early 2023, the first execution of a transgender woman in US history was carried out in the state of Missouri. The lethal injection was administered to 49-year-old Amber McLaughlin, convicted of murder committed in 2003.
