The first edition of "The Hobbit" was sold at auction for almost $40,000

A rare first edition of the novel "The Hobbit" British author JRR Tolkien sold at auction for £31,200 (over $39,000).

According to Ukrinform, this was reported by the BBC.

The sold lot was the first copy of the well-known fantasy novel “The Hobbit, or There and From There”, written in 1937. In total, there are 1500 original copies of this work.

The book was found in a chest of drawers in a house in the county of Berkshire in the south  of Great Britain, it was inherited by the owner.

The edition is illustrated in black -white drawings by Tolkien, who also designed the cover.

The price for which the first edition of The Hobbit sold exceeded the auction house's initial estimate of between £7,000 and £10,000 .

As reported by Ukrinform, the manuscript of British writer Arthur Conan Doyle's novel “The Sign of Four” will be sold at Sotheby's auction in New York. from a series of works about Sherlock Holmes.
