Poland is thinking about making the skies safer

In Poland, the question of the possibility of shooting down Russian missiles near the country's borders are being considered from a technical and legal point of view.

“This issue is being considered from a legal and technical point of view, but there are no decisions in this matter,” Polish Foreign Ministry Speaker Pavel Wronsky told Ukrinform in a commentary , adding that the Ukrainian side approached the Polish side with this kind of initiative.

Vronsky noted that conversations on this issue in Poland arose after a Russian missile violated the country’s airspace in March of this year while being in it 39 seconds. According to him, discussions are being held around whether Polish air defense systems could shoot down such missiles over the territory of Ukraine and what the legal consequences of such a step could be.

He explained that international law experts should give their assessment regarding what legal consequences this step may have, because we are talking about missiles that have a warhead of hundreds of kilograms, and when they fall, they can cause significant damage on the ground. In addition, technical specialists must give their assessment and come to an agreement on the conditions under which these missiles can be shot down.

At the same time, a representative of the Polish Foreign Ministry emphasized that we are not talking about the physical transfer of elements of the Polish air defense system to Ukraine.

"There is no discussion about this at all in Poland. There is no possibility that the Polish air defense system would be outside the country’s borders,” Vronsky emphasized.
