The French MotoGP rider Johann Zarco was sanctioned for “irresponsible driving” after his accident with Franco Morbidelli at the Austrian MotoGP GP, and will start from the pits in the next race, the International Motorcycle Federation (FIM) announced on Friday .

“After the examination, it was determined that there are tests of irresponsible driving on the part of Johann Zarco , for which he was sanctioned,” the FIM said in a statement.

Injured as a result of the accident, the French rider did not participate in the first free trials of the Styrian GP this Friday, and his presence in Sunday's race is in doubt.

Zarco, who drives for the Ducati-Avintia team, rejected all responsibility in the spectacular accident, in which only he was injured, with a fractured scaphoid. “There should be no sanction because I did not commit anything crazy,” declared the pilot after testifying before the stewards. “You can't participate in this sport if you don't want to take risks,” he added.

Zarco braked around a corner in front of Morbidelli, who was unable to avoid him. His motorcycles disintegrated on the track, being about to collide violently with Valentino Rossi.

The sanction is relatively benign, since by not being able to participate in the free trials, Zarco could not have classified above 10th place, and also his injury would have weighed him down for the race, if at all.
