In our traditional “speak beautifully” column, we have collected synonyms in Ukrainian for slang words that you can often hear in the conversations of young people, but still did not understand what they mean.
< p>For the most part, modern youth slang is English words or their slightly modified versions for the Ukrainian language. However, these words remain unknown to the general public, and sometimes even from the context it is difficult to determine what a person really means when using such expressions in their conversation.
The word yuzaty comes from the English “use” and directly means to use, which is a direct translation. For example:
- Every day I yuzayu (use) the same application on my phone to listen to music.
English LOL stands for laughed out loud and translates to “laugh out loud”. Young people use this word rather as an exclamation and a reaction in dialogue to the previous remark. For example:
– Can you imagine, I confused him with an acquaintance and ran after a stranger all the way…
– LOL (very funny)!
From the English creep – to shudder. Means something that terrifies you. For example:
- She came to the holiday in some terrible (terrible) dress and did not fit into our team at all.
A synonym for the slang word “mess” – mistake It is very simple to give an example:
- Some kind of mistake (error) happened!
From the English cringe – to eat. This word is used when describing situations or emotions that are close to shame. For example:
- I fell in front of him at the entrance to the office, and also tried to grab his jeans. It turned out very cringefully (shamefully).
The literal translation from English fail is failure. For example:
- It was a real fail (failure)!

He is from the English leave – to leave, to leave. Similarly, the Ukrainian ending -уты/-аты was added to the word “use”. For example:
- He decided that it was time to leave (leave) so that he would not be forced to do something else.
The word “ugar” is very similar to LOL and used in similar situations. The difference is that LOL is more often an exclamation. An example is as follows:
- We had a real hangover yesterday (funny situation)!
