The different movements and organizations of 'Youth for the Climate-Fridays For Future, Rebelión por el Clima and Alianza por el Clima' have held this Friday climate strikes and different protest events, about 3,000 face-to-face but above all virtual, in 150 countries – among them Spain – to urgently demand greater global action against climate change because “the emergency has not disappeared.”

From Sweden, the young Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, inspirer of the global youth climate movement, has defended that Fridays for Future and the youth climate movement “are attacking again around the world, in a safe way and following the guidelines of Covid-19 , to demand that those in power treat this as the urgent crisis that it is, “reports Europa Press.

Last year, this Friday millions of people took to the streets around the world to demand climate action, coinciding with Climate Week and the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization.

From the organization, they remember that then the world leaders congratulated the young people whom they portrayed as “beacons of hope”, but now they denounce the “inaction of those same governments.”

Thus, they denounce that for young people in the areas most affected by the climate crisis 2019 it was a struggle in which millions of people had to leave their homes and it was one of the hottest years on record .

As extreme weather events, fires and floods triggered by climate crises accelerate around the world, strikes are a reminder to those in power that the climate crisis has not disappeared.

“The climate crisis is already having a major impact on communities like mine in Africa. Unprecedented heavy rains and record floods in West, Central and East Africa have affected millions of people in recent weeks, with more than 200 dead and hundreds of thousands homeless. In the United States there are devastating wildfires, climate collapse is not something that will happen in the future, it is here and now, “said young Kenyan activist Kevin Mtai.

Five years of the Paris Agreement

The marches and strikes coincide with the fifth anniversary of the Paris Climate Agreement and the International Agreement on the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda, which young people trusted to end poverty, reduce inequality and address the crisis climatic.

Five years later, the organization regretted that “the delivery fell short of that ambition with the worsening of the impacts of the climate crisis.”

“The climate crisis requires a rapid change of gear in all areas to break away from polluting technologies and carbon-intensive industries. We need our governments to rescue people and the planet , supporting the solutions we need for a just recovery that avoids climate collapse, create good jobs, promote environmental justice and support livable communities, “claimed executive director May Boeve.

The organization insists that the marches and mobilizations that have been held in person have complied with the prevention measures to stop the coronavirus pandemic.

Hundreds of protesters in Barcelona

In Spain, hundreds of people have participated in the protest that Fridays for Future has called in the Barcelona center, according to Efe. The organizers of the event in the Catalan capital, following anticovid regulations, all those who wanted to participate in the protest had to register by providing their phone or email.

Some 500 people have registered, although in the end there have been a few fewer who have participated in the protest, which has been carried out from 6:00 p.m. in a festive atmosphere at the Barcelona Exiample, on Passeig de Gràcia between the streets of Consell de Cent and Gran Via.
