Ukrainian high jumper, Olympic champion Yaroslava Maguchih was nominated for the title of the best European athlete of 2024. This is already the third nomination for the award for a Ukrainian woman.
The list of applicants for the award was announced by the Federation of European Athletics (European Athletics).
The 23-year-old Ukrainian will compete with nine other athletes for the honorary award. You can vote until September 29 via this link.
Nominees for the title of European track and field athlete – 2024:
- Femke Ball (Netherlands) is a world record holder with runner at a distance of 400 meters indoors (49.17), European record holder in the 400-meter hurdles (50.95), two-time European and world champion, three-time medalist of the Olympic Games in Paris.
- Yemizi Ogunleye (Nigeria)– Olympic shot put champion, world indoor silver medalist, European bronze medalist.
- Nafissatu Thiam (Belgium) – Olympic heptathlon champion, European champion, season record holder (6880 points ).
- Malaika Mihambo (Germany) – European long jump champion, Olympic silver medalist, season record holder (7.22 m).
- Yaroslava Maguchih (Ukraine)– Olympic high jump champion, European champion, world record holder (2.10 m), Diamond League champion.
- Sifan Hassan (Netherlands) – Olympic marathon champion, bronze medalist of the Olympic Games (5,000 and 10,000 m).
- Nadia Battocletti (Italy) – European champion (5,000 and 10,000 m), silver medalist of the Olympic Games (10,000 m).
- Keely Hodgkinson (Great Britain)– Olympic champion in the 800-meter run, European champion, world record holder (1:54.61).
- Natalia Kaczmarek (Poland) – European champion in the 400-meter run, bronze medalist Olympic Games.
- Sirena Samba-Mayela (France) – European champion in the 100-meter hurdles, silver medalist of the Olympic Games and the World Indoor Championship (60 meters with barriers).
Let us remind you that last year the title of the best European track and field athlete went to the Dutchwoman Femka Bol.
Maguchih awards:
This season, Maguchih won gold at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, won gold at the European Championships and silver at the World Indoor Championships, and also became the champion of the Diamond League, winning all the stages in which she participated.
< p>At the beginning of July this year Maguchih broke the world record in high jump among women. At the stage of the Diamond League in Paris, the Ukrainian woman was the first in history to reach a height of 2.10 meters. Yaroslava surpassed the achievements of Bulgarian Stefka Kostadinova, who jumped 2.09 meters at the 1987 World Championships in Rome.
