MEXICO – Xin Xin and Shuan Shuan are two giant pandas born in captivity in Mexico and whose only name is Chinese.
Contrary other pups born elsewhere and have to go to China, the country of origin of the species, these two remain in Mexico, told AFP officials Chapultepec Zoo.
“They belong to Mexico,” confirmed one, Rafael Tinajero.
With their plump body and tender gaze, these two specimens are, according to him, the only ones of the species that are not the property of China.
The two ursidae are now the most famous tenants of the Chapultepec Zoo, in the heart of the Mexican capital.
They are also the last representatives of a line of panda, a mammal considered to be vulnerable, which began in 1975, the date on which the Chinese government had loaned Mexico a couple – Ying Ying and Pe Pe – as was the case. with other countries.
In the late 1980s, the Chinese government changed its policy and has only temporarily lent pandas in return for a payment used to protect the species.
As Ying Ying and Pe Pe arrived in Mexico before Beijing changed its policy, Xin Xin and Shuan Shuan will therefore remain in Mexico.
“With this, Mexico becomes the first country outside of China with a natural reproduction of pandas outside their natural habitat, under conditions of captivity,” added Rafael Tinajero.
According to him, eight other pandas were born in Mexico between the 1980s and the 1990s, but only four survived.
